The October 11, 2008 Adopt A River Day highlighted a new phase in this volunteer effort: Stream monitoring. Volunteers including Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero donned waders and scooped up samples of the water in the Grand River. By examining the aquatic life in the samples, volunteers can better determine the river's overall health. The Lansing Board of Water & Light is sponsoring the stream monitoring program, which is conducted by the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council. Adopt A River brings hundreds of volunteers of all ages to the riverfront, both in the spring and the fall. New activities are planned for spring, 2009. Stay tuned!
