** WHO'S WHO
**
OUR ADULT FEMALE PEREGRINE FALCON'S NAME IS W.C. - SHE IS FROM LIMA,
OHIO, HATCHED APRIL 30 2007, SO SHE IS 5 YEARS OLD.
W.C. STANDS FOR W COIL - THE BUILDING WHERE SHE
HATCHED AND FLEDGED FROM IN LIMA.
M.P. (OUR ADULT
MALE FROM LAST YEAR) DID STAY ALL
THRU OUR WINTER WITH W.C. THEY WOULD VISIT OFF AND ON AND HE DID STAY
UNTIL A NEW ADULT MALE SHOWED UP.
Two Friday's ago, March 16, I noticed 2 falcon's in
the nesting box and they both had bands. I zoomed into the
footage of the day before, the 15th, and found the 'intruder' to be tagged
*P/*H BLACK/GREEN
The P and the H
are both tilted ..when a bird is banded and the letters are tilted = it's
written with " * " the asterisk means
tilted
He is not an intruder
anymore. He is seen daily here, and is our new adult male and taking care
of WC while she is covering her egg (s) and staying close to protect his
new home. He has been bringing a meal
to WC everyday.
We have not been able
to put a name to the face yet, his bands are not entered into the Banding
Database online. I have sent a form to 'them' and hope to hear
back soon , ... who he is, where he was banded, how old is he, and what's his
name!!! I have learned that he did nest in Jackson last summer, and
produced 2 offspring there with an unbanded
female.
Here is a picture of our new adult male and his leg
band..
ACTIVE INCUBATION STARTS WHEN THE 2ND EGG IS LAID AND WILL LAST
FOR 30-35 DAYS.
The young peregrine has a tough first year where their mortality rate is highest at this stage.
When the peregrine survives it's first winter, the odds of continued survival increase.
The MDNR will band the eyasses when they mature to about 3 weeks old.
The nestling will begin to fledge when they reach approx 40-45 days old.
In 2004, 3 Peregrine Falcon chicks were raised by Stelco(female) and Alimak(male) at our Eckert Power Station.
