Winner 2006 APPA Community Service Award
The Lansing Board of Water and Light is the 2006 recipient of the prestigious American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Community Service Award.
The Community Service Award is one of only two utility-wide awards given by APPA. The other, the E. F. Scattergood System Achievement Award, honors utilities for outstanding overall achievement. The BWL was a recipient of the Scattergood Award in 1989.
The BWL is the only Michigan utility to be honored with either award.
Only 64 of more than 2,000 public power utilities have received the Community Service Award since its inception. The award is given to public power utilities that have shown a commitment to enhancing the quality of life in their community through activities that address a community need or improve the community’s social, cultural, educational, or economic environment, and which also provide opportunities for employee involvement.
The BWL was cited for several community-based programs. They include Adopt A River, the BWL Chili Cook-Off, Silver Bells in the City, the BWL’s School Safety Program, and BWL EnergyWise Services.
The Community Service Award was established in 1990 to recognize “good neighbor” activities that demonstrate the commitment of the utility and its employees to the community.
