The Lansing Board of Water & Light restored power to 13,753 customers at the Eckert Substation. The outage lasted approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and impacted much of BWL’s service territory.
In the interest of transparency, the BWL initially reported that 30,000 customers were without power, which is the number of customers served by the Eckert Substation. Upon further investigation, it was determined that only a portion of the substation failed, thus resulting in the lower outage number.
The outage was caused during required testing, which caused a portion of the substation to trip offline. Effective immediately BWL General Manager Dick Peffley has directed all testing for the Eckert Substation be done on nights and weekends in order to minimize any inconvenience if outages result from the testing. The aging Eckert Substation is slated to be replaced by the Central Substation, which is currently under construction and will provide more reliable power when it goes online.
